domestic violence at noise upstairs//
November 23rd, 2010
on the 14th of november we went to manchester with our domestic violence project and sonic arts friends from london : D
to perform on NOISE UPSTAIRS night >>
http://www.thenoiseupstairs.com/The_Noise_Upstairs/Home/Home.html
it was massive.. very intimate event.. organised by Rodrigo Constanzo – experimental musician and soundart teacher at one of manchesters collages http://www.rodrigoconstanzo.com/Home/Home.html
together with his friends he is organising / noise upstairs / since 3 years…
Noise Upstairs is a free-improv jam night / a night of alternative forms of expression.. all sorts of electro-acoustic improvisation / noise / sound art…
thanks to those guys who invited us we could perform on their noise event and see their project performance – Takahashi’s Shellfish Concern.. which i truly loved… while Rodrigo and Anton were creating amazing sound scapes on guitar pedal effects and iPad with various audio applications, Angela was harshly and sensually painting the canvas with water paint her hands and brushes.. and random objects [nails, string].. contact mikes were placed under the canvas so every motion she made was translated into sound.. all streams altogether changed into very clean and energetic clangour sonic journey… this act is ideally reflecting my idea of having sound/vision combined with physical movement..
Rodrigo, Angela Guyton and Anton Hunter are creating extraordinary space for experiments with sound and visual art..
‘Takahashi’s Shellfish Concern combines abstract expressionist visual art with experimental electronic-acoustic music to accentuate the similarities of both during improvised exchanges.’ >> http://www.takahashisshellfishconcern.com/Home/Home.html
we had long beautiful evening.. of interesting music and conversations..
im so glad for meeting very nice people..
we already planned some collaborative av works.. on their dvd relase.. soon…

thanks to our dear eve fainke [london based stylist / costume maker] we managed to make a freaky costume..
together with eve and andrzej we were making it for couple of nights..
following the concept [which me and fukalata created while listening to the track..] .. – a slo-mo impression of monster/quirky shape in a forest.. little visual poem.. with its simplicity and complexity of stream…
we decided to make a costume / wearable sculpture from founded objects…
costume is made from plastic transparent foil, and plastic bags + some bits of tulle fabric.. [all recycled ! : D - human waste..
we found it in a container outside the uni.. they were mainly huge plastic mattress covers.. etc + some other piles of plastic i collected at culture lab] we glued plastic surfaces together with a hot glue..
and build crazy looking soft synthetic shape.. which i could put on myself and act like a massive jelly-fish gremlin.. : D
it was strange yet amazing experience.. despite the fact i couldnt really breathe : P
this costume – amazing shape in motion.. was the main point of our experimental video impression.. loose dreamy vision.. playing with timeline / perception and non-linear structures..
we headed off to jesmond dene to record some ‘forest creature rituals’ : D
due to our work circumstances ..we havent got exact idea what the finishing bit will be like..
we were surprised by amazing shapes that were produced from the shape .. and how this plastic plasma was behaving when we applied motion and movement..
we used sony Z7 cam and recorded it in slow motion…
i’ve edited it together with andrzej.. low cuts.. and we used pretty much whole shots.. than we added some post-pro ‘ninja skills for making it look hypno 3d glasses backwards blurry vision and thats mainly it]
it is kinda funny cause even raw files looked amazing.. with very intense colours..
and the character looked like it was cuted and pasted there from a green screen : P strange.. cause of the light and some digital mess.. i think
im glad of the outcome… ! love it…
thanks to our collective creative input*

domestic violence at vane gallery ::
November 10th, 2010
on the 26th of october we did an av set at vane gallery..
our performance was a part of the event called ‘ Into the gravy ‘ – A talk on collaborative practices and professional development in contemporary art ..
thanks to Gabriela Arrigoni who organised it …
heres a brief info about the event >>
http://www.artrabbit.com/uk/events/event/21708/into_the_gravy_the_cooperative_impulse
number or artists and curators taking part in a talk were debating on how important is collaborative practice within the art world and what benefits are we getting from the independent galleries environments and non-institutional
activities / groups.. also about importance of independent [non-academical] spaces / communities for knowledge sharing …
[my point: how necessary it is for those places to exist and be available open and reachable for anyone who is interested... !]
chat was quite interesting..
i loved the fact that carole luby who is in charge of one of the best independent ‘in-house’ gallery in newcastle, also took part in a discussion… [carole is organising artist residencies and exhibitions in her magic house - statford grove 25
.. since a year and a half this tempting initiative become a little mecca of contemporary art practice and spontaneous experiments.. ] people at the talk who were familiar with sg25 were trying to explain why it is so different than official art institutions.. and why those kind of initiatives are so important..
[some of them know sg25 and experienced this beautiful environment]*
its brilliant what this kinda space can offer to people… no doubt that it is very different from many institutions.. -
more open.. with a warm family atmosphere .. in this extraordinary context the term ‘collaboration’ is becoming a different broaden experience… in sg25 collective work is on the daily basis… taking care of each other, sharing the knowledge and feedback is less pretentious than at any other type of place.. the whole experience seem to be very intimate personal and richer.. + loose informal notion and warm delicious home-made food :D
another example of creating independent art estate is new bridge project… ! [guys from new bridge also took part in a discussion.. ]
superb initiative which offers UK emerging artists studio spaces… great community..
again started by 2 dynamic young people who had an idea and enough energy to transform an old office building
into art community.. and places for work!*
isnt that amazing… community matters! and conclusion was.. that collaboration is happening here and now and there and at all time and everywhere… because we need to co-operate with others [also in the art world] .. we can never be truly purely independent.. of course.. ! nothing new.. it is so pleasant to share to build and work loosely in a group.. . only than we can grow and develop ourselves .. through exchange..
//
anyway…
i need to say that i very appreciate any kind of art / culture institutions.. either more underground places and bigger galleries.. on the other hand sometimes im finding them truly irritating [either underground spaces and bigger galleries / formal institutions.. :] …i appreciate any kind of reasonable environment..
but of course independent initiatives will be always different than commercial ones .. and will expose participator to particular atmosphere…
probably i havent said anything fresh.. but these are the general topics / notes from a chat at vane..
//
out of the tune.. :D another good thing is that in the last few weeks i’ve met new people with whom i really want to collaborate as we share this united stream of sensitivity and ideas ! and it is happening now! i cannot wait the outcome..

unsound festival//
November 8th, 2010
update update!*
so many things happen .. …
so much magic* and bizarre transitions..
last 3 weeks were incredibly hectic.. [i love being on the move and being in the mood of action..]
rushing from one gig to another running after the party and teleporting to other city to give performance with no time to sleep can be excited too : P
we went to poland for unsound festival >> to give some visual set to actress ….
than we came back to newcastle just to perform at the vane gallery the same day.. [great talk / event by gabriela arrigoni - cheers for that :]
few hours after that we went to london to throw some visuals on / behind bars / party.. [thank you jose macabra!* it was superb!!]***
when coming back we gave a small concert at barkollo… [warmly wrapped in my strait jacket i gave a set which from what i've heard was very different than the last one... ]
our little [pussykrew / domestic violence] world domination tour didnt finished yet.. . seems like november and december will be very excited too.. as there are number of performances coming on / noise sets / video sets / interactive installations and some project journeys involved .. [machester/london/warsaw/helsinki]* cute!*
getting creatively busy is my favorite activity : D
visuals by me + andrzej – Pussykrew >> http://unsound.pl/en/festival/program/artists/2010/show/221
we went to krakow for 4 days.. to spread some visual poetry, have fun, experience the festival, meet some friends..
was good.. i havent really found anything that would blow my mind … even if the line up was pretty promising [i've seen lots of same artists already on a different occasions.. and i guess i kinda demanding person when it goes with musical taste space place and sound stream energy.. ] but in general atmosphere was thrilling.. and what made me excited the most was meeting number of very interesting people..
we did 2 v sets on friday for Actress and saturday for dorian concept which was completely different … but still fun*
i was truly surprised and satisfied by Actress set on friday.. it was pretty harsh dark and heavy… : P i loved it.. so i think our visuals fitted perfectly : D .. also Oni Aykun was brilliant that night.. .
after our set we got so many positive reviews… from other artists, organisers and friends.. that was incredible..
we’ve been even mentioned in guardian magazine as ‘low-res digital nightmares’ : D in the unsound festival review..
pretty accurate description..
>> http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2010/oct/27/unsound-festival
::
i havent done any documentation [except few pics] that night :: but i found on the net some short pieces of our set filmed by random people ::
PUSSYKREW video set UNSOUND FESTIVAL 2010 >>
pussykrew in action >>

//
and also there is a short unsound festival documentary, selection of day/night events and gigs…
and friday one shows few seconds of pussykrew/actress set also >>
::
vivid video footage ..::
in general we used our footage from the artworks / video installations / videoclips we did during the last year.. and generate live glitches on top of it [self-build little video mixers] mixed it together with datamoshed pixel soup… + live video feed from my gun-camera : D filtered through max patch to achieve the random mix of frames and video drunk delay..
we used max/msp for live video effects and module8 .. we build few different patches in max to play around.. and achieve some interactive visual journey …
and small DIY analogue mini video mixers for glitches which Andrzej build long time ago..
the same equipment we are using when we are performing with domestic violence..
parts of patch were mainly video effects [all audio reactive.. ] >>
+ one of the patches was generating animations, shapes which were also reacting to the sound.. * we used many different max objects + effects and filters.. [delay+displacement+decomposition - like jit.repos, video delay + colour blending.. and more more.. check below.. ]
thanks to peakamp~ max object >> [monitors an incoming signal and reports the absolute value of the peak amplitude of the signal it has received since the last time it was reported.] in other words.. all the visuals reacts on the audio even some small changes in sound are visible on the screen… laptop mike is picking up particular amplitude of sound and adjusting / ‘tuning in’ visual site [flashes, glitchez, animation, mixing frames etc] for the audio…
here are some parts of the patch that we constructed for our live video performance set / [modified examples] which we’ve been using during video set on unsound and other v / av sets… [ /behind bars/ and next one coming - /Antagony/ at London.. ]
i havent got time to record any visible video tests of the patches and live examples of ‘how it works’ but ill try to do it later.. [for now you have to believe me.. or try this at home to make sure... :PPP :]
tikuls got a studio at / new bridge // !!*
November 4th, 2010
we got a studio at New Bridge Project Space!!!* [New Bridge Studios & Gallery] >> Norham House 12 New Bridge Street ::
im very excited about the fact of being a part of new community, having place to work and opportunity to exhibit it and meeting so many interesting artists.. :D
//
here is a blog for the project where youll find all the updates about upcoming exhibitions
>> http://thenewbridgeproject.blogspot.com/
and a recent short article about this great initiative and fantastic people who started it >> http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/news/NewBridgeStudio/
it is fantastic opportunity + square space to work at + incredibly massive 5 floor space to use for artists and their most mad ideas.. + awesome people to share the space with.. + exhibitions every month .. and more more to come..
check the PopUp Initiative >> http://www.ses.coop/component/content/article/38-street-pics/131-popup-initiative.html?font-size=larger
‘NewBridge Studio offers working space to around 50 artists, providing a supportive and communal atmosphere with an emphasis on local contribution. It presents vital networking opportunities and low cost studio space to artists which would otherwise be expensive. Both the provision of space and in-depth discussion of work are intended to develop the skills and creative practice of all those taking part. After a few months NewBridge Studios will be open to the public on Saturdays, allowing interaction between visitors and the artists. We aim to increase cultural awareness for those who may not normally take interest by offering a unique and honest insight into contemporary art.’
i dont have any pictures of my cute studio for now.. it is almost empty.. so in the next few weeks im gonna start my crazy creative new bridge activity… will post them soon*
//
in the main time we decided to do a series of events on the 4th floor… [audio-visual free impro jams, performances, gigs, installations]*
when we’ve entered this amazing huge building we couldnt resist ..
so we did the first collaborative av meeting and played few individual sets with our friends.. and in the end of an evening we did a group jam.. .
few people came in.. it was so intimate and nice… sound and projection in a norham house works incredibly well…
me, Andzej and Ben decided to repeat this event maybe on a monthly basis… and invite other artists to join us in a free av journey… and present their sound streams…
we are planning soon to do a series of workshops and other creative activities in collaboration with culture lab students and researchers in a New Bridge.. more independent artistic activities / performances..
and keep the space alive and vibrant.. .
here are some pictures of our small gig organised at norham house >> [visuals by tikul+jendrek]

and a short documentation i did [including all 3 audio performances - domestic violence / wedding shibari / ben thompson] :
