i’ve enjoyed all TAA ///DIY punk electronics\\\ performances …
met lots of great musicians and people… found lots of new connections//
i truly loved ryan jordan’s amazing hipnotic performance… and his micro zen movements in a strobo lights…
ryan jordan::

::
and my dear eve fainke who was hosting us through those intense days full of stimulus’ … we’ve met eve in berlin on ctm/transmediale festival and got in touch… within the crazy creative flow…
eve started to run a magic open space in london called butchers corner :: [next to the costume shop on new cross road]
she want to fill the space with workshops, interactive performances, diy electronics knowledge exchange, craft etc… space in under the intense development from now on… various performances are happening there every week*
it is tempting and open for anyone who is passionate…. to join a community for arts / fashion / electronics / !!!***
it was a good experience… im deeply happy and satisfied with what we did* making and using own self build interface is an essence of creative freedom!!!*
i love this personal punk diy approach.. and the fact that our music video actions shouldnt be judged or classified in anyway… because it is all about action* about ritualism. of energy release… nothing more… no description necessary… just chaos* : D
::
i’ve realised that i dont really like the idea of ‘table-topped’ interface… as it leaves no space for movement during the performance… i’m missing something…
but this case was the only reason why this idea appeared as a flat interface…
i’ve completely destroyed ‘barbwired’ project interface :: [ http://www.vimeo.com/8707261 ]
to rebuild it again and make it more solid*
so for this particular situation simple ‘square’ ‘table’interface was a better idea in terms od transport / fragility / weight / shape / mobile atributs / etc….
as i know how complicated. difficult and fragile was caring pressure sensors ‘barbwired’ project on my body …
///
but playing with this new interface … i found it not fully satisfying for me [in terms of lack of field for wild spontaneous movement during the performance]… and kind of against my concept of using sensors.. and against my personal concept of fulfilled real time interdisciplinary live act which i have in my head.. even it was simply easier to do it this way… – as a standard flat object….
so now im planning to change it again to something which will be more engaging… and go back to my previous idea : ][as far as i can work it our somehow... ] and at the same time make it appropriate to use in a various positions… and gestures… + add more substance to it* and develop it constantly and shape it in various ways to meet my needs* and particular moments…
I would like to attached them to my body again somehow.. and have more physical control of them.. . like we’ve did on Platfrom09 that would be consistent with my earlier concept… of using my body and its movement / gestures to control audio/video data stream… and feel deeply connected to my digital extension…
i would like to add more action to this performance… more motion based real tools*
and want to add again some motion to it… some cyber spice drama*
but again for making more ‘aggressive gestures this kind of interface would be to fragile to play with… i know that from my own experience while building the wearable sensors soft circuit project*
will see what will happen. now i’ve had a fresh idea already… it is all about improving… !!!***
and to play with electronics i am able to transform them in whatever form i like, reuse them again and again, easily without damaging the components… : D
im working at the moment on development of this instrument.. and thinking how to transform this interface again into motion based tool* i want to change it into ritual digital mad dance!*
which for me is much more interesting rather than static audio-visual performance…
//but it have its good and bad sides…
::::::::::::::::
Ryan Jordan explained the whole idea of importance of a real ‘physical’ performance in his work::… [very close to my heart stream. this description is hitting the core of my statement..::]
// As an artist/musician born into the era of digital musicianship and only knowing music making/performance in the digital domain, the possibility of connecting with the physical body is of great importance and extremely appealing. To have a direct and immediate physical control over a sound is one of the key aims of the Sensory Response Systems project. The main and most common interface to engage with digital data is the common computer keyboard, screen and mouse.
Although this interface is undoubtedly extremely efficient and is suitable for some current computer music performances, such as Live coding 7, it is limited, insufficient and restricting in terms of physical performance. A performance can be greatly enhanced by incorporating physical gestures into sounds as the audience can easily see that there is a cause and affect happening. When an artist
is performing and simply staring into their laptop screen it can be less engaging for the audience.In order to create immersing and engaging performance experiences for the audience I would argue that there needs to be a physical presence supporting an audiovisual stimuli. This physical presence makes the performance experience more human as there is undoubtedly a body present and it is affecting the audiovisual output. Making DIY instruments with software combined with hardware enables this process to materialise.//
:::::Domestic Violence performance project became as well our submission for Live Electronic Performace module within which we were discovering secrets of music theory, super collider soft. more max/msp and stuff… through the last 6 months…
here are some fragments of the project description: [warning! very chaotic*]
:::::::::::::::::::::::
Domestic Violence project – Electronic Life Performance module submission ::
Our collaborative project is the prototype of the piece itself is an 2 piece audio interface which will be used for Domestic Violence project – av noise performance.
And a little recorder which allows the performer to record his voice live, loop it and layer the effects on the top of it.
I would say it is a prototype as it looks very raw and simple with uncovered exposed messy cables. But I truly like this DIY punk electronics style and approach.
And that’s the character of it. It is usefull as well when facing the first problems,
It can be easy fixed as it is still open and ready to rebuilt.
Each interface is build from 6 FSR’s arduino, plastic surface, breadboard and jumper wires which are connecting the circuit.
Arduino is translating the signals connected to the laptop and Max/MSP. In Max there is a patch with selection of samples. We were using quite common Max objects.
FSR( force sensitive resistors ) are attached to the plastic surface. FSRs are controlling mainly effects inside max/msp transforming prerecorded sounds / samples. One of the pressure sensors is releasing the sound. The rest 4 of them are various audio effects.
Depending on how strong and how many sensors were pressed at the same time – the sound was transformed and changed into more intense.
Each sensor and combination of sensors was creating a different sound modulation vary from reverbs to distortion and granular synthesis.
For the music samples we used the prerecorded field recordings, body sounds etc.
Separated part connected with a wire to the interface surface – [little black box] is a recorder mainly build with piezo speaker and contact mike .. a small loop station : ] with layering function and ability to record voice or sounds and use the effects from Max/MSP : ) beautiful accomplishment.. this object is adding more raw life spontaneity to the performance.. as it creates the samples live! for me it is extremely important to use my own voice when producing music… this little recorder is perfect for that*
:::::::::::::
Our freshly born noise project – Domestic Violence and few recent performances showed that the self build interface refers perfectly to our idea of creating a music.
Domestic Violence is a noise project that is rooted in our fascination with extreme noise as a structure [or lack of this structure]. Omnipresent noise and its representation is our music.
The name / title of the project symbolise pathological state of the society, the atmospehere and notion of the sound is harsh and purifying.
The music which I would like to create is Physical and Culturally explorative
free noise.
In the future we are planning to transform this project performance / interface into even more ‘physical’ device to make the whole piece more dynamic with theatrical performative notion.
And use other various types of sensors and objects and more advanced physical movement to produce the sound.
The development of the suitable music interface and exploration of the area of electronic noise seems to be very satisfying for us as a users and performers.
For me building my own instruments have really ideological and personal meaning. By creating my own instrument I have a total control of what I want to achieve in audio or video fields. This interface is perfect in terms of sizes mobility and easy to fix.
DIY approach is very important.
I found creating my own controllers and interfaces very satisfying, as it feels like I have a deep connection with those objects and they became very personal for me. I think it is more interesting and exciting than using mass produced ‘ready made’ restricted performance artist attributes – controllers, midis, etc.
I found it incredibly fulfilling, being able to create my performance the way i want and if required reconstruct and deconstruct my devices.. and make it different.
I is a matter and desire of getting our hands ‘dirty’ and experiment with cables and devices. Once the self build interface is broken it can be fixed.
”We want something raw, real, and different, even if it doesn’t work ‘properly’. We are not interested in clean, packaged, sterile systems: we want something of our own, that belongs with us, that has an intimate connection with us. The want and need to have personalised instruments and interfaces is a natural subversion of mass produced, mass market, capitalist technology.” -
Ryan Jordan

The design of Domestic Violence interface is a prototype for now. As a priority in development is the functionality instead of the nice cover.
We’re planning to work on the design in the future as well. When the interface will achieve its last transformation and we will finish it.
Force sensitive / Pressure Sensor interface is another variation of the earlier project for Platform09 where the interface was attached to the body of the musician.
At the same time performance became more physical and theatrical.
In the future I would like to work on this type of expression through electronics, body, audio visual content.
Again, we’ve found using pressure sensors extremely satisfying. Generating sound through FSR [force sensitive resistors] fascinates me intensely with the actual physical gesture of a pressure itself.
A fact that more powerful pressure makes the audio effect more intense is the perfect idea of merging physical power with intensity of sound.
It is a self build instrument that contain all the necessary audio effects with the ability of modifications of samples, effects, visual contents.
And became a perfect instrument for intense performative experimental noise art.
However the sound is like, unsophisticated naive, simple, primitive or so on… the most important for me is the act. An act of performance. And act of noise. Act of releasing the energy.
I truly enjoyed this piece and our performative gigs. I cannot classify it in any way. I dont want to.
But the whole experience is very pleasant and purifying for me. And I hope it will have similar therapeutic healing influence on the audience.
I would like to improve it and make it sound more powerful, sophisticated and gain more knowledge of a sound structure and its force.
+ combine the sound and the visual side of the project to make it sound reactive [with help of jitter :]
currently for visual side of this project we are planning to continue working with data moshing phenomenon, and make this project deeply audio-visual with both areas affecting each other. we would like to be able to use processing or OpenFrameworks to destroy’ video data on a live basis.
work in progress!::
DOING module/ presentation::
June 15th, 2010
preparing my presentation for DOING module .. – theme : EXTENSIONS OF A MAN::
my first very bright thought when brainstorming through Extensions of a Man and McLuhan phylosophy /
was related to mechanical weapon.
… mechanical weapon as a human forces extension. extension of an arm, of human ability to kill…
i’ve analised the whole idea of a mechanical gun holding gesture… as something which is coded in human behavior, something very powerful.
/////////////////////////////
i got this gun replica in dublin market year and a half ago… and together with andrzej, at that time we were planning to use it in an art project by doing a street action – conceptual happening… [place the small cam inside the gun, point in people and record their faces... ]
offensive but explorative… important. analyse of a human behavioral system and pathological instinct of a gun holder :: amazing powerful shape***
then i’ve decide to use this gun object for Doing module final project… my concept shifted and became an idea of making a gun audio interface / I would like to develop it further and use it as a part of my sound sensor interface for / domestic violence / audio-visual project performance… :: http://soundcloud.com/domestic_violence/
///
random brainstorming :::::::::: during the process….
exploration of gun holding gesture in terms of psychological question – ”how does it make the person feel when holding the gun ??”
observations : / mechanical gesture unconscious feeling of power possessing / ability to feel powerful /
genome of violence? :
ergonomically shaped : ‘it fits the hand incredibly well’ : natural instinct : magical gesture of holding weapon and weaving it as in tai chi movement or faster like it would be exciting thrilling type of practice or sport…
gun // holding / shaking / rotate / gesture / turn / movement / weapon / extension / mechanical / robot arm / curiosity
strange feeling / willing to play with the object and use it not to necessary kill someone but to find out how it feels like. ..
::
every time random person see a plastic gun .. is immediately taking it in their hand holding it … smiling.. pretending to shoot.. pointing at someone../ jumping around with the gun it and playing in ‘kids war’…
//
i was curious of this psychological structure that hidden impulse that is making every [i guess almost every] person wishing to hold it ..
thrilling moment… hidden desire of using it… excitement… fear… embarrassment…
but deep deep desire to have it in their hands.. as something pleasant … like a joystick… antistress ball .. or jojo ?!
only difference is that this object is extremely powerful…
what is that something which is causing this mechanical reaction… ?
even if it is just a fake gun. each person was imagining and acting like it would be a real one..
even if everyone knew that it is a fake gun it is always this uncomfortable feeling when someone is pointing it …
how come it is so uncomfortable and so pleasant at the same time… ???
//
i was trying to psychologically analise the whole concept of a gun, its shape and human behavior when holding it… shaking it, pointing…
i’ve decided to use a gun .. as an instrument which will trigger something when the person will hold it and shake it …
as it is almost an instinctual behavior in most cases…
i wanted to go back to my first idea – use micro camera and place it inside the gun…
so the person can see their own face reaction when the gun is pointed at them…
but the last and final, non-final idea was to trigger the sound by a gun and transform the sound with gun holding gesture…
[ in future development of this project im planning to combine those two ideas... and work with the camera as well. so the sound can be played and vision can be seen. this plan needs more preparations though... and surely will be more complicated... also will required number few more objects to use... ]
//
i’ve build a prototype system to trigger the sound and transform the sound through gun holding gestures…
using arduino : accelerometer [i've used 2 axis, but tried 3axis as well] – which would be sensitive for motion : old tape/ voice recorder : with
sound of human breath / as for it relates somehow to the unhealthy excitement when playing with the gun…
and it relates in general to life… breath as a symbol of life… and a uncomfortable thrilling feeling, while holding a gun… //consideration of how easy it is to take someones life… . just with one gesture… from a distance…
i wanted the accelerometer to change the speed of the tape … by soldering two wires to change the electricity flow so the tape is playing faster slower or making various noises….
i’ve hacked the cassette player and solder wires to its inside to make the tape with the breath recording play slower or faster… i’ve placed accelerometer inside the gun .. .so the accelerometer is controling the sound from the tape… depending on the gun movement the breath is slower of faster. when the gun is rapidly shaken ..the sound is changing into unidentified noise…
//
i decided to not use max and any software for this particular project… and keep it mechanical. i wanted to avoid of using laptop and advanced soft… i found it quite difficult to hack the casete player and make it work the way I wanted… trigerin sound with accelerometer using max/msp would be probably easier/…
for the later development of this sound interface i’m planning to connect it to max/msp and combine it with my existing patch [noise project]… and use gun object as a part of interface… i may attach more sensors to the gun object… for having various range of sounds…
//////
i think by building this prototype i havent explore this idea as deep as i could…
but i will try to accomplished this project and making it wireless at the last stage by using bluetooth or XBees + arduino mini… I would like to achieve wireless connection between arduino, accelerometer and max/msp to feel comfortable with any gesture ill make when using the gun* and not being worried about wires….
while struggling with this whole mechanism i’ve burned one casette player… :P
:::::hope this all makes sense…
