basic shape in processing//
February 25th, 2010
this is probably not very impressive.. : P
but thats my first basic shape in processing [ DOING - 10/02/10 - Intro to Processing and Procedural Computer Drawing ]
:: evil cat ::
i really want to cut it out on a laser cutter and make a necklace…

////
together with the crazy team we went to the Workshop space in CL and we’ve learned how to use laser cutter…
that was exciting… I’ve made a few cat shapes from the pink perspex acrylic sheet and the mirror one.. so everyone could have one and change them into wearable object…
here is a raw pic of my first cute cut cats*

code for the cat:
//import processing.pdf.*;
size(200*2, 200*2);
//beginRecord(PDF, “line.pdf”);
smooth();
background(0);
color catbody = color(226);
color earsnose = color(0, 0, 0);
color black = color(0, 0, 0);
fill(catbody);
triangle(50*2, 30*2, 50*2, 70*2, 90*2, 40*2);
triangle(150*2, 30*2, 150*2, 70*2, 110*2, 40*2);
fill(catbody);
noStroke();
ellipse(100*2, 80*2, 110*2, 100*2);
//draw nose
fill(earsnose);
stroke(1);
triangle(100*2, 115*2, 90*2, 105*2, 110*2, 105*2);
strokeWeight(12);
line(60*2, 85*2, 85*2, 90*2);
line(140*2, 85*2, 115*2, 90*2);
fill(earsnose);
noStroke();
ellipse(59*2,42*2,5*2,5*2);

Photo-walk :: Heart of the City
February 22nd, 2010
project for Mobile Media & Media Ecologies
[ http://www.newcastle.gov.uk/core.nsf/a/hoc_home ]
so i went for a walk to the ‘Heart of the City’ to sense it, touch it… take some photos and experience the place.. i was there before but i guess i was just passing by so i couldn’t notice anything interesting.. except the abstract black rabbit on the top of the building….
first of all i thought i wouldn’t know that this place is some kind of touristic historical famous object as there is no information that i could found about the status of this place…. and its importance as a ‘heart of the city’
or maybe i didnt payed to much attention to this kind of signs and details…
//
i’ve decided to look at the place and explore it though in and out as myself. .. in my own way… through my own eyes.. not as a tourist … as i am not a tourist i am an explorer//
i’m also very interested in spaces places, [public, used and abandoned] since always… i love to to investigate structures, shapes, building characters, industrialism, landscape transformations or urban architecture…. and inspect what kind of emotions and thoughts they’re causing in me and they work, whats their energy like…
some spaces in newcastle i found very powerful….
leaded by my curious nature i felt strong need to explore the ‘inner’ side of the Cathedral and the Black Gate complex…. thats why i’ve concentrated my attention on the back ‘hidden’ side of the Cathedral … and its ‘non touristic at all’ non representative different face…
on the back there were lots of skate kids, tags, smashed window, metal bars, back of the ‘designer hair’ hairdresser [what a ridiculous name?!], air conditioners, ugly smell of old overused oil from the restaurant….
here some random raw pics which i took that afternoon:
Q+A::
+ Do you know what year the house you live in was built? How would you find out? Are you interested? Why/why not?
which house… when im thinking my house i dont have any particular place in mind… i feel like a nomad who is constantly moving and changing spaces.. i dont have ‘my house’ but actually the only thing which i had coded in my mind as ‘my house’ was my parents house.. a place from my childhood and younger years… in my hometown..
this is a very special house… as they’ve organise it and build it themselves [ with a help of other family members and building side workers... of course ]
it is a very nice 3 floor huge house… with a big garden near the forest.. on the street full of chestnut trees and similar houses….
but now i dont have a very warm memories from this place and it is not a place where i like to go back… as it is not the same as it was when i was young…
according to the sentence that the house and home warmth cosy bonfire atmosphere is caused by people who live in there…
//
i prefer to live on the fly… i dont miss ‘my house’ or any solid place which would be truly ‘mine’ … where i can set up…
+ Do you know your own family history? How would you find out? Are you interested? Why/why not?
i was interested some time ago.. .i kind of forgot about that now ..[lack of time and possibilities to do some research...] but yes.. .very.. probably because through the knowledge about my family and its roots i can find lots about myself…. i was wondering many times where my family is coming from.. all i found i think it is quite mixed and for sure from one side of the family there are some strong russian roots…
also when i was a child i used to love my grandmothers stories about sort of family history, travels, her adventures… and i started to discover some informations about my family… once i even wanted to build my family tree but my dad told me that is would be too complicated and i would need lots of time and energy to do it despite the fact of struggling with after war nightmares [people were translocated constantly] – administrative difficulties to find the some documents and a people who could know more about my family origins…
+ Do you use any technologies which investigate history? Which ones and how do you use them?
i prefer the future instead of history… [but there is no future without the history.. ] i like historical places but forgotten places instead of touristic icons… i like to use technology to investigate ‘now’ ..
i am a fetishist of abandoned forgotten places… [are they as well historical places.. ? cause every time im thinking 'historical place' i think about touristic places, famous ruins, castles etc... ]
if i found some place very moving im doing an intense research on the net… and i really find myself very easily as a internet researcher … i like to have some records [ photographs, footage ] from the places which i felt i would like to embrace… i discovered few places in newcaste which i would like to use for some of my artistic projects…
////////////////
the project which involves technology and urban space which i liked :
Sonic City:: by Lalya Gaye
> Mobile electronic music making with the city as interface:
[ http://www.viktoria.se/~lalya/projects/soniccity.html ]
Idea of a ‘wearable system that enables users to create a real-time personal soundscape of electronic music by walking through and interacting with urban environments’ is quite stunning…
i like the element of interactivity in this piece and also the fact that it is some sort of self build sound sculpture…
//
DOING : 10/02/10 : Intro to Processing

i havent draw any cool shapes yet…
but i found this video here very inspiring for my future adventures with processing :
SLIT SCAN : : [ time warp ]
idea of messing up with the time line and forming a video frames structure as a nonlinear liquid shape is actually quite cool//
CTM + Transmediale festival 2010// ……..culture lab on tour*
February 14th, 2010
herzlich wilkommen :> :>
after positively hectic 2weeks of snowee berlinrrr trip…
feels like a piece of me is still in berlin and dont want to come back i can hardly concentrate now on a simple things…
Newcastle calling::
/according to the truth that not every single event during the festival need to be pure powerful and stunning for the whole festival to be a good perceptional and knowledge developing experience.. /
danke well guys for amazing days and nights!::
//
i am enormously happy that most of the students went to berlin this year ..
no only for benefits of the festival but for amazing united social experience………… we’ve had pretty busy thrilling time::
there was enough ‘intellectual brain food’ as well as ‘audio visual trips’ however i was a bit disappointed with the level of the festival this year [ regarding the poor line up, lack of visuals during the concerts, amount of experimental forms, spaces, the new club WMF and few other stuff which didnt worked so well on the CTM/TM 2010... according to me last editions of the festival were richer in number of events and innovative, experimental fresh approach....
last year [and 10 years before] the whole ClubTransmediale was placed at Maria Club… lovely place. comparing to the current CTM club – WMF … maria was more spacious even when busy, cosy, there was more installations, better character, raw concrete spontaneous design… im not concerned with WMF … as i preferred ‘old’ TM club – Maria Ostanhoff … i think most of ‘transmedialers’ do…
also the soundsystem seamed to work better in Maria Club…. Speaker sound wave and acoustic quality in Haus der Kultur der Welt wasnt really great… when listening to Ryoji Ikeda i was expecting the sound to be clean pure and loud enough…. but maybe my expectations are too high and my ears too sophisticated : P .. but when i saw mr Ikeda last time in Dublin in a sort of Cathedral space… the sound was perfect…!
also HBC space [ where some of the events took place ] looked totally different than last year – all furnished, refurbished, fresh and new…
A-MAZE project + game exhibition in HBC was quite dry and flat.. not because im not interested with games ..
//
despite all the little disappointing points the whole two weeks berlin experience was great!*
I still could found and experienced quite good amount of stunning performances and i’ve met few new wonderful people from Berlin and London… new contacts / magic threads connections
CultureLab group trip went so well… as well as Network Independent Market// we had a great time together within those 12 days of berlin flow….
as everyone of us is a bit different it was nice to see each person happy and fulfilled with different events which they found interesting….
during a very eclectic line up every person could found something which was stunning exactly for them and something which hits the core of each persons sensitivity taste and needs..
it was so good to see each person getting excited about festival events .. everyone found something satisfying for themselves ….
as it is quite hard to move around in a big group… is was difficult and not really possible to organize 12 people in one place… pitty that we couldn’t spend more time together … but im sure everyone was happy with doing their own space/time research : )
we’ve eventually managed to form a smaller groups… im glad that i had a chance to spend great time with Alessandro, Andrea and Ben… meeting the rest on a different parts of our journey through audio visual vibes and interactive sculptures of the city berlin. it was a really nice fruitful time … time to experience so many stimulants together..
//
just a quick journal sketch of things which i found the most interesting:
//////////
actually the most stunning performances which i’ve experienced during my berlin journey took place outside CTM/Transmediale Festival… at some underground audio-galleries/shops and cameral off-cinemas that we’ve discovered, flying through some delicious electro-acoustic improvisation.. one of them:
+++ StaalPlaat – duo – Takuro Mizuta Lippit aka DJ Sniff and his turntables virtuosity, self build objects + computer [ http://www.djsniff.com/ ] + Mario de Vega – turntables, objects & electronics – [ http://www.mariodevega.info ] in this magic place at Flughafenstrasse 38 [ -----> ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::http://www.staalplaat.com/about/ ] /Staalplaat is a forum for soundartists, an organisation network with a music label, an e-zine, a radioprogram, an audio-galerie, shop, mail order and distribution company, started in Amsterdam, concentrated on new and experimental music::
anyway no need to write about this.. you can watch the performance here –> [ http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/4379372 ]
+++Ausland – our another discover – [ ausland is a non-commercially run venue in berlin for music and performance and related public and non-public events. ausland is also a workspace for local, national and international artists and projects ---> [ http://www.ausland-berlin.de/stanglfagaschinski-castellode-vega ] again great musician Mario de Vega (MEX/D): electronics + Angélica Castelló (MEX/A): recorders, electronics, tapes…
and little hidden cinema / K77 / where our friend was playing with his project – URINATORIUM –> [ http://www.myspace.com/urinatorium ]
//
during ClubTransmediale the performances which were most powerful for me: Alex Nowitz ..[ I've got through emotional orgasm during his theatrical drama [voice+ 2wii controllers] performance … ]
and Keiji Haino with his psychedelic surrounding noise…
also great exhibition at SPA – UdK Pulse Lab: Flächen und Linien – // Works from students of the Sound Studies program at the Berlin University of Arts, curated by Professor Robert Henke/ .. it was nice to see this healthy approach to sound art …
i really enjoyed Robert Henke’s [who's music i truly always loved] and Taku’s [ DJ Sniff - STEIM, Amsterdam] lectures –> // Defining your own instrument/. We’ve attended a workshop with STEIM artists too – // Connect – Map – Music where we’ve had a chance to learn JunXion software…
I’ve met Taku and saw his performance for the first time… and he appeared as one of most charming charismatic talented personas with this warm and balanced zen energy coming from his words gestures and mind. I love his approach to sound, making instruments and artworks. He is a perfect speaker and educator.
Generally according to my observations artists from Steim are presenting very high level of amazing skills + unique character and sophisticated musical sensitivity … but probably thats nothing new for impro sound lovers and musical interfaces builders : ) that STEIM is a incredibly magic place…: :
//
my personal girlie taste was satisfied during /Planningtorock/ gig + videoart … this lady is just like a fusion of psychedelic tim burtons character rollin disco ball, dark cold icelandic fairy-tales, atmosphere of tricky goblins, ondines, nymphs with the sound of violins filtered accordion and electronic beats … + effective crazy hoarse voice and incredible sensual visuals [openFrameWorks i guess :] with the imagery form of a theatrical dramatic show…
[ Pllanningtorock - The alter ego of multi-instrumentalist/programmer/videographer Janine Rostron ]
audiovisual presentation that borrows from classical music, glam rock, spacey imagery, and hip-hop. A classically trained violinist who began playing at age eight, Rostron moved from Bolton, Lancashire, to Berlin in 2002 the Planningtorock persona first surfaced in 2004, when she began performing at the city’s clubs. Planningtorock’s live shows blurred the boundaries between concerts and performance art, with Rostron wearing outlandish helmets and costumes and interacting with video characters. ]
::
Ikeda, PanSonic, Byetone + quite good as always despite very same super stunning style for many years : ] Anyway mr Ikeda is still a guru-genious : mind moving brain storming character which allows people to trip into matrices of sound.. and let go of their bodies through convulsions… twitches spasms of data tics ::
but… the rest of the R. Noton [ with all my unforgettable endless love and true respect to RasterNoton ] quite unfresh.. again..im waiting for some rebelious evolution i guess :: raster noton was for me a revolutionary cold detroit style perfectly granuralized wise ‘idm’ music of the 20th century ..but now we have 21st…
+ good old Jan Jelinek + friends and their 8hour impro electric ‘kraut minimal click cuts micro glitch jazz’ performance [refreshing balsam for the soul]*
+ very warm crazy gig – Dan Deacon.. he is still able to wake up a wild child in every person and cause this intense team/playful/family feeling within the audience…
///TRANSMEDIALE:
i have to mention here about very important lecture and speaker Matteo Pasquinelli – and bring up some links for the people who didnt got the chance to be there…
one of the most interesting and powerful lectures of transmediale 2010 was the conference on the last day of the festival in House of World Cultures : :

we’ve also managed to make a day trip again to hamburger bahnhoff gallery… one of the biggest and greatest contemporary/modern art mekkas ….
it was amazing to feel truly overloaded with such a great arts and see pieces of familiar classical names like /barney, mccarthy, Nam June Paik, Nauman, Pipilotti Rist, Beuys, Wolf Vostell etc/ : :

////////////// CREATIVE INDEPENDENTS NETWORK MARKET::
-culture lab hub
Independent Network Market was a big surprise… i would never expect that we will meet there so many interesting people…. they were so curious about us…
we’ve made a few connections, contacts, invitations to our Culture Lab planet [friend of artificiel - POWER 2009]… and got some propositions of presenting our DM works at Lab30 festival….. we had a good fun in there too : ) and had a chance to spend time chatting with people …. they were truly interested about Culture Lab and our works…
here some crazy pics form the /Creative Independents Network Market/ 5-6/02/10 : :

[market pics by john o. and ben : ]
FUTURITY WHEN ?* HOW ?*
again no conclusions and no guides no solutions for the future… [as there is no ready made solutions]
after each talk and debate it felt a bit empty and dry ….it is not bringing much hope for the future…. open source open culture is great we know that already, but despite that human nature is so hard to change and to manage…
as for broadening horizons festival like this, opinion shaping, creating new judgments, view maker event, it was not as intense and rebelliously independent this year….
but I’ve enjoyed it so much. there were moments and people and thoughts !* : D very important… which i have still in my mind…
