Steetley Magnesite//
January 26th, 2010
///few days ago i’ve experienced something truly incredible… an abandoned miracle of industriality and nature….
this was probably one of the most amazing places i ever saw in my life.. ideal urban dereliction
//
[ i should mention here that i am a big fan/lover and almost fetishist of abandoned places... so i cannot help myself with this unhealthy silly stream of excitement... ]
Me and Andrzej went to middlesbrough city for the pre-application seminar for Digital City Fellowship few days ago…. and on the way there through the train window we saw this place………..
i got completely under the charm of this old demolished magnesium factory by the sea in Hartlepool…. i cannot even describe how out of space it was…
just perfect….
huge abandoned territory, a complex of warehouses number of massive water tanks, chimneys, ruins…. situated by the beach… behind the demolition zone – view of the sea … this is just magic! … pretty strange place…. very unique
total energy.
i’m already planing a trip with DM mates + necessary cameras, recorders and all the equipment we could carry to perpetuate and observe this fantastic urban projection phenomenon// derelict relict*
exciting…. automatic phantasmagoria…
it may look a bit like a postindustrial cliche… but well what can i do… i like cliche than … : P
i will try to avoid this kind of stereotype rendering by producing new fresh vision of this place and a different output…. which will fit the concept of the new video collaborative production [ with kerem ozan and alesandro altavilla ]
//
I think it just blowed my mind out……. it is so beautiful … wrecked… full of water…. im simply amazed…
check this out:
those are some of the pictures which i found on the net : :
http://www.mercuryvapour.co.uk/gallery/index.php?/category/steetley
i did a web research and i finally found the origin of this place……
the train station is called Hartlepool and the place – Steetley Magnesite – /was originally built to produce magnesium from seawater, the site was closed after two failed attempts to keep it running in 2005…
Many parts of this site have now been demolished but any further demolition has been halted because the site is a habitat for nesting birds…./
: : :
here is a short history of the place:
http://www.ephotozine.com/photolocations/555/Steetley-Magnesite–Hartlepool
and a map: http://wikimapia.org/11137559/Steetley-Magnesite
//
also we’ve just realise that in this place was shooted the short movie/animation from 2006
which was on one dot zero release… ::
http://www.richardfenwick.com/artificialworlds.html
[it is quite poor quality now and this 3D + idm aphex twin style audio is very oldschool now but i remember when i saw this movie at that time it was fascinating... despite the movie and its quality.... this place looks incredible.... ]
this place is so unreal…
///////////////////////
i am sure that would be one of the main spaces to record for our audiovisual project plan…. [ in the near future ]
it is perfect//
thats the place which we were looking for … during our exploration of the urban scape for :
videoclip :: pixels we lost in fire -
together with my Culture Lab friends – Kerem and Alesandro + my creation partner – Andrzej
we got a spontanious idea to build a short movie production… a videoclip for one of the Alesandros audio creations….
i think there was some simple strong need to work on some piece together….
after we found out… that .. some parts of our sensitivity are very common for each one of us… feelings/taste/experience/ideologies/meanings/perception paths… .quite similar / also the fact that every one of us is working in a slightly different area … alesandro is a composer and sound artist from italy.. also interested in activism, ecology, photography and videoart : [ --> http://www.myspace.com/12deadpixels ] kerem is a 3D/painting/sculpture/installation/video artist ….. [ --> http://keremozan.com/ ]
we’ve decided to unite our forces and experience this unique some sort of loose collaboration… but i would say more for our personal experience together and friendship of visionary expressions … simple joy of making and learning each others structures….
and discover what we could do together… if we have very similar pictures in our heads….
we are planning to make an intensive video impression for
/pixels we lost in the fire/ beautiful and piercing track composed by alesandro…
at the moment doing some research, putting together some scenario visions, descriptions, words, ideas, symbols,
notions of the video, representations of very strong personal and emotional composition…..
we are exploring the atmospheric spaces which are related to this idea … looking for inspirations ….
and nostalgia of forgotten places …. last week we were on the first collective’ trip.. on the beach near newcastle where we’ve recorded amazing sounds of the waves resonating in the pipe…. sounds of the wind….. and number of photographs…
to put all the puzzles together… step by step/ we’ve planned next trips to discover this time the beautiful woods of tyne and wear………… and look for sensible scapes… improvise and find where it could take us…
the atmosphere of our trips is great ……. i would love them to happen regularly… feels like we are discovering together other planets : :
conductive skin//
January 23rd, 2010
i just discovered this project today :
bare – conductive skin//

/Bare is a conductive ink that is applied directly onto the skin allowing the creation of custom electronic circuitry. This innovative material allows users to interact with electronics through gesture, movement, and touch.
Bare can be applied with a brush, stamp or spray and is non-toxic and temporary. Application areas include dance, music, computer interfaces, communication and medical devices. Bare is an intuitive and non-invasive technology which will allow users to bridge the gap between electronics and the body./

soft circuits// + interactive objects::
January 23rd, 2010
one of the research areas which i would like to explore is physical computing in relation to wearable technologies – soft fashion circuits —>
i’m interested in the aspects of physical computing in regarding to performance oriented constructions

i’ve just started my exciting adventure with technology and physical computing though… so.. i’m in the state of learning basics and ‘afterbasics’ and at the same time doing some research on the net …
after my first ‘prototype’ of wearable interactive installation/audiovisual performance work build from fabric wires programing board and av software i would like to continue my work on conceptual interdisciplinary art form including soft wearable circuit…
my hyper active interest in many [too many] branches and fields of art could be combined in one ……… i am sure of that//

Transmediale festival* 2010 // Culture Lab on tour ! ::
9 days to go*//
exciting and very very happy to experience it with Culture Lab group …
tikuls blurry divagations…:
::::::……….berlin// an amazing urban sculpture
people, actions, constant transformation, individuals marking their existence, strongly influencing public open space, demonstration of unique character, intense temperament and charisma…. synthetic shapes// cold walls / thrilling spirit//
it is like a living tempting artwork, digital canvas, real place with mental parallel estate of energy…
in according to thought: /people are shaping architecture, architecture shapes people/
//
i was in berlin many times.. since i was a teenager… since an early age i was affected by german/berliner culture and art [my hometown is on the border with germany.. so berlin was very close and very close to my sensitivity taste and my the core of my soul..] i was amazed, truly enthralled by this place as a creation estate…. and its character/ –> german new wave cinema, raw electronic music, clean design …
then i’ve started this sweet tradition of traveling to a different festivals every year// but berlinerrr place is the one which i truly love with all by heart and guts//
it feels like this city is my own planet and i simply belong in there, in a world of industrial postmodernist architecture, synthetic music, rebellious atmosphere in the air, open art societies, creative avant-garde communities, vibrant warehouses, kopi squats and incredible amount of environmental stimuli + motivation ..
so i’m trying to hang around in berlin and explore this magic concrete city as often as i can…::
[ i still dont know why i'm not living there .. there was a moment when i truly desired it... through strong teenage fascination, my mind was marked with beautifullness and poetics of this estate/ i was kind of afraid for some time that this city will absorb me totally into its dangerous madness, colours and bohemian lifestyle... or maybe i wanted to keep it like a sacred oasis where i can always come back to and heat the wave of massive energy... ]
for now my path is in some other place and it is good too… i like the celebration of going there .. sometimes i feel like i’m partly living there in some way :]
/////////////////////////////////////////////////////
i found transmediale one of the best and most interesting festivals, maybe because of its atmosphere, location and rich eclectic line up full of interdisciplinary artforms and a perfect fusion of brain food, sophisticated sound waves and bouncing party rabbits…// true balance
i’ve have gone through few transmediale trips already and i’d love to continue this adventure……
the great thing also is that every year i’m meeting there lots of people from ‘Transmediale Family’ – artists and passionate viewers, who are coming for this festival constantly from all over the world… so we simply know each other after common experiences .. is int that great ? true social + art platform//
//
So i came up with this idea to spread the fascination and excitement and ask Culture Lab members if they want to go… and together with a great common effort we came up with the proposal plan that we could do a group student trip and present our work and Culture Lab infrastructure, attitude in there… enjoy interesting journey through audiovisual art events and make some connections for future collaborations which i found very easy in berlin
…the little wind blow idea turned into a real tornado…
huge response.. incredible number of students interested in participation…
i felt people were excited about the group trip and willing to discover the berliner art space ship… some Culture Lab friends from last year are already practicing ‘transmediale tradition’ so it is not new for them……….. either way it will be fun fun fun* and incredibly brain satiated sophistication//
this would be something new, refreshing.. .i am very glad and grateful that i will enjoy this amazing huge event with my CL colleagues… hope that this will be unforgettable joyful social common experience too. it is a great chance to spend some time together and to know each others deeper…
surrounded by art, new media, intellectual stimulants and great atmosphere/
meeting lots of new super artistic open personas… [i'm hoping to meet as well nice Berlin UDK students which ve'we meet in Helsinki on Pixelache Festival:]
looking forward to this* as well as transmediale + clubtransmediale .. this years line up is as interesting as always…
even if i’ve already experienced some of artists from TM line up on a different events… but im keen to see them again*
despite that day + night program seemed to be made especially for physical computing/DIY/open source/interactive art/politics+ecology+sustainability/culture/ideology/eclectic intelligent music lovers!* like us… : )
//
thanks to our tutors we found the space to exhibit and build a Culture Lab Hub for few days… NK house project :
magic gallery with intense events [ --> http://www.nkprojekt.de/ ]
after a little struggle with time and ourselves ..instead of rushing and trying to put everything together in few weeks [not much time to organise a proper exhibition], we’ve decided to organise CL group presentation at Transmediale /Creative Independents Network Market/* for now…
our first plan – exhibition in NK art gallery will happen in the near future… until that time we will stay in contact with the gallery and explore some NK bits… NK project warmly expressed willing for future connections with Culture Lab, they were very happy about the vision of future collaborations with us// and proposed us the space and their best support whenever we will make any plans to put on an exhibition, meeting, workshop etc…
i hope i’ll meet the gallery members personally on one of the TM events soon*
all the TM program events will take place in some other spaces anyway: HBC, SPA and WMF Club [ not in Maria - 'Traditional Transmediale Family Club' this time... i wonder how it would feel like... ]
for now concentrating on development of our knowledge… and throw in an informal presentation at perfect loose platform for artists and art passionate individuals –> /TM Creative Independents Network Market/*

great opportunity to meet cool interesting people, exchange some flow, raise the awareness…
This is the space where we will attend Transmediale2010 /Creative Independents Network Market/ at 5 – 6 January
one of my truly favorite unique places in Berlin : D which looks like an old cinema/post office + squat freestyle open art gallery and last year i’ve experienced ARTKILLART03 noise fest in there and a brilliant off exhibition,

Saturday Night with Max*
January 17th, 2010
another lovely evening with max/msp/jitter
trying to learn and improve my skills and understand more max/msp and audio modifications which im interested in.. playing around with some sexy digital audio objects ;] … studying tuts again : additive synthesis + frequency modulation + FFT//
[ my 'research field' and its results still looks very basic for now.. / it doesn't really matter how many hours i'm spending trying to learn max... still feels like i'm an amateur... still feels like i'm digging my own nice little hole in the kiddie sandpit : 0 on a playground, so i'm trying to dig as many holes as a can to have this hope that one day i will be able to create some serious projects ;]
//
i was quite thrilled by the options of transforming video or a picture into sound wave form …
i’ve started to play around with phasor~/peek~/matrix/ and some of audio synthesis… trying to produce some interesting sound wave from a my photograph…
i found a patch which allows to do that…
//The jit.peek~ object reads the value of one plane of a matrix cell at the position specified by the signal inputs. This value is output as a signal . The object arguments are [matrix_name] [dim_inputcount] [plane]//
i was trying to modify this patch and come up with some sound transformations… /add some distortion/mdaGranular/oscillators and other bits… and trying to modify the picture itself …. to effect the sound in a different way….
this is still work in progress i’ve made few options of sound output effect .. i wanted to add mdeGranular~ beautiful and cliche sound synthesis … : )
but every time i’ve tried that my max was crushing…. //
original patch /example found on net:
modified patch:
[by adding second phasor data is picked up from vertical and horizontal lines also... / + by adding 'brcosa' max object ... - changing contrast, brightness and saturation of my picture i was able to transform the sound and control the audio in a real time ... ] + gverb + trapezoid audio modulators//

‘When two objects or people touch, they exchange electric charge.’
This intimate sound performance draws ultra connections between highly related individuals.
Sensual feelings, toxic obsessions, intense emotions are translated through physical contact into sound vibrations. Electric circuit circle outlined gently as a visible electric wire.
Shared experiences: Notes and neurons::
/ By touching the pressure sensors and conductive thread pads attached to each others’ clothes, fabric and body parts, performers will produce sound.
In the scene also will be presented video projection as a supplement of this act. /
/ Interactions and gestures during the performance were dictated by atmosphere and personal emotions in this particular moment of our relation. /

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////
very short video documentation and few pictures here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/space_pussycat/sets/72157623072872042/ that’s all i have unfortunately…
but i’m planning to work again on this project and improve it.. so i deconstructed it and i will hopefully build proper ‘wearable instrument’ in the near future… for now this is kind of prototype of an outfit // the design of this one was not very sophisticated.. i would say the concept was more important in this artwork..
//more detailed description of this construction ::
Our wearable piece consists of FSR ( force sensitive resistors ) wired to our sweatshirts and pads covered with conductive thread also attached to our sweatshirts. FSRs were controlling mainly effects inside max/msp transforming prerecorded sounds.
Pads with conductive threads were working as input and ground of the Arduino board. Sound couldn’t be released unless person have touched the ground situated on the partner at the same time closing the circuit allowing electricity flow and giving impulse to max/msp to start playing the music.
Depending on how strong and how many sensors were pressed at the same time – the sound was transformed and changed into more intense.
Each sensor and combination of sensors was creating a different sound modulation vary from reverbs to distortion and granular synthesis.
So basically to play noisy sounds we needed to touch each others conductive thread’s pads followed by pressing the sensors to modify the audio::
For the music samples we used the sounds of our bodies recorded by ourselves.
