The maifesto had been done several days ago. I took a hand-writting form to create it and added some illustrations which can represent post-truth in my opinion on it.

The project is done as well. This which I call “Anti-lost Machine” is definitely a combination thing but it’s more like a flash based computer game.

Finally, the presentation will be about the general processings of the project. but considering it has to be performative, so I made a video in it.

HSS8120 Research : The Power of Music

Uncategorized

Music has been shown to consistently elicit emotional responses in its listeners, and this relationship between human affect and music has been studied in depth. This includes isolating which specific features of a musical work or performance convey or elicit certain reactions, the nature of the reactions themselves, and how characteristics of the listener may determine which emotions are felt. The field draws upon and has significant implications for such areas as philosophy, musicology, and aesthetics, as well the acts of musical composition and performance. The implications for casual listeners are also great; research has shown that the pleasurable feelings associated with emotional music are the result of dopamine release in the striatum—the same anatomical areas that underpin the anticipatory and rewarding aspects of drug addiction.

Moreover, the researchers found that music powerfully influenced the emotional ratings of the faces. Happy music made happy faces seem even happier while sad music exaggerated the melancholy of a frown.  A similar effect was also observed with neutral faces. The simple moral is that the emotions of music are “cross-modal,” and can easily spread from sensory system to another.

Even though emotions is a comprehensive psychological and physiological state, many researchs have confirmed that It can affected by colours. Specifically, different colors will make people feel different and the color can affect and change a person’s mood.

While perceptions of color are somewhat subjective, there are some color effects that have universal meaning. Colors in the red area of the color spectrum are known as warm colors and include red, orange and yellow. These warm colors evoke emotions ranging from feelings of warmth and comfort to feelings of anger and hostility.

Colors on the blue side of the spectrum are known as cool colors and include blue, purple and green. These colors are often described as calm, but can also call to mind feelings of sadness or indifference.

HSS8120 Stop making rubbish

Uncategorized

LACMA010

When I was researching the post-truth and trying to find some ideas to inspire myself, I found a video on YouTube which called “The Truth About Modern Art”. It said some of modern arts are rubbish, thay are trying to make themselves look sophisticated by describing meaning to something completely meaningless. And the public are more likely to try to understand the meaningless art’s meaning, which is sad.

The picture above is a piece of modern art in LACMA, which is just a huge rock, but it cost 10 million dollars. Compared with Michelangelo’s sculptures it took considerablely less time and skill.

So, inspired by this video, I am trying to make my work:

  1. more realistic, to let the audience understand the meaning of it easily.
  2. to avoid being pretentious or craftless.

  1. The project – include three elements : feeling (emotion),fact and audience (the public). My initial thinking is using sounds, colours and graphics to show that how emotions can affect people’s opinions toward the facts.

Beyond that, I will design the graphics and patterns and add interactive elements in my project which I am not familiar with.

2. The manifesto is going to be a artefact in written form and it is in processing now.

3. Haven’t decide the style of the performative lecture, I will think about that after the project is done.

HSS8120 What’s Post-truth?

Post-truth – Oxford Dictionaries’ Word of the Year. The Oxford Dictionaries website told readers post-truth could be “one of the defining words of our time.”

The term comes from an idea that became popular during the 2016 election campaign in the United States. Post-truth, as the website defines it, means to relate to situations where “objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief.”

Oxford Dictionaries officials say they chose post-truth as Word of the Year because of its rising popularity. They said the term’s usage appeared to increase 2,000% in 2016 alone.

Casper Grathwohl is the president of Oxford Dictionaries. He said that the choice was no surprise after a year filled with difficult discussions about politics. He said post-truth has become popular at a time when more people are using social media to get news. Some people trust social media more for news and information than establishment media or political leaders.

If you plan to use the word, Oxford Dictionaries defines it as an adjective. An example of it is the expression “post-truth politics.” The website said that post-truth has gone from being a new term to a word often used in political commentary. Major publications now use the term without feeling the need to define its meaning.

What’s post-truth in my opinion : Firstly, I think the meaning of post-truth is the impact of emotion and personal belief surpass the fact’s. Secondy, post-truth is a phenomenon when social media is booming. Less people get news from traditional ways, like TV and newspaper.

One of our projects – puppet animation which contained some elements that I’m not familiar with but interested in, say lights and shadows. Since I’m really into photograph as well, so I’d like to learn more about how to use those two elements in the photo properly and integrate them into further projects.

                                                              shadows_20161207002857

At first, it was pretty hard to find the place to set the mini characters. We find a transparent plastic surface but it didn’t works. Then we thought we can use the overhead projection in the studio to let the shadow show up and glue sticks on the puppets to hold them. Then we turned on the overhead projection and changed the angle of the light to make the character’s shadow as clear as possible. I realized we can change the distance between the light and puppet to change the clarity and size of the character. When moving the light, the shadow always move to the opposite direction of the light.

However, personally, I think the biggest drawback of this project is leak of interaction with the audience. I guess that’s a pretty important thing in terms of artworks, so I will try to add it into next project.

I think the audience of this project will be artists or people who fancy arts.
