Max Fragmentation 2

After thinking through this title and playing about with Max it seems that the idea that all things are fragmented when displayed (working wit the quote from William Vaughan in his essay ‘History of Art in the Digital Age: Problems and Possibilities’) that my idea of fragmenting a scene or art work would really compliment this theory further fragmenting the artwork and or image.

My thoughts have moved onto a manner as to fragment reality is some sort of playing with the concept of time and place. This coincides nicely with my theoretical research on windows and mirrors and the idea of user contribution/ experience.

Aaron Koblin

Just found a really interesting connection between some of new participatory web experiences thanks to Brigitta. So it seems that this guy Aaron Koblin is involved in most of the new music and data visualisation projects coming out. lets just say that he is a bit of  a ninja.

“the culture of the 21st century will be defined by the interface”

“the interface is a powerful narrative device”

The Internal Retreat from Shared Public Space

Looking at how we close ourselves of in public spaces such as the subway (metro) and retreat into using devices such as Ipod, mobile phone … both intrusive yet solitary, only one person engaged … unless you are “lucky” enough to have a gang of young persons in tracksuits play their favourite tunes at a horrid quality through their mobiles speaker (singular) for all to enjoy and nod accordingly!

“That inward gaze was a self-contained contradiction. It was a way of being alone together. It was a kind of communal separateness, a community of individuals respecting one another’s private space.”

“Like those subway riders of the late 1930s, you’ll find that common focus in any subway car today; many people simultaneously reading the same real estate ads, the same editorials, the same words at the same time. Like their common inward gaze, they have found a communal separateness, alone together.”

– very true on the nexus metro system …. most persons reading the Metro paper on their way to and from work have a moral  system of leaving the paper on your seat or placing it into a newspaper dispenser (for want of better words) has occurred allowing other commuters to read the same paper saving waste and giving an interest for those on the metro. This act contributes to the community of commuters, I wonder how many are aware of their membership?

“With this personal technology, we occupy an efficient, comfortable and entertaining private bubble. We are also more and more mentally removed. Our attendance in physical surroundings becomes more solitary, less shared. We are alone and separate in public.”

Fragmentation Max

Found a really incisive quote in regard to digital images by William Vaughan in his essay ‘History of Art in the Digital Age: Problems and Possibilities’.

His sentiments begin that : – The digital image rather than it being a reproduction in the way that an analogue is. It is a transformation of an image.

He then goes on to say :-

“the physical means of display encourage a fragmentary approach. The limited definition offered by most screens restricts quality, encouraging this process of fragmentation in the way we look at them” (2005:6).

Technology will probably evolve past these ideas but I think the reference applies to textures, shadows and tones. I am going to use this as a starting point for Max project looking into the how fragment possible classics? Or fragment reality itself…..

Really nice little device that …

Device that hijacks Instagram sharing app for the iPhone , collects the images geo-tagged at a specific location and prints them out. Very cute.

MAX msp Jitter

After having a wee look around the internet it seems that I will have to have a look into Jitter! Supports all sorts of visual data controls….TO BE CONTINUED

MIP reflection

If I was to start this project again I think I would look further into my initial ideas, that of a flowing river resonating above one of the hidden waterways and the image fugulator, and possibly thinking about combining the two like Michael suggested. It has only really come to me recently about how I could do this and it was simply holding a theme between the two concepts. It seems that water would have been a safe enough option to explore. The use of the public traffic to both produce the audio level of water running as well as allowing them to be able to discover hidden imagery within the scene would have worked really well together and it is something I am definitely going to look into further over the coming months. The technology I think would not need to be intrinsically connected just the suggestion and the close proximity of the two ideas would suggest and compliment each other.

IR Poem Box Code

Finally got the code working properly to randomise text from Robert Burns Poem about water. Not the hardest of codes but still I’m reasonably chuffed about how it works.

char *poem[]={“once”, “there”, “was”, “water”, “dancing”, “everywhere”, “it”, “flowed”, “tumbled”,”tossed”, “and”, “danced”, “singing”, “the”, “story”, “of”, “our” , “for-fathers”,”Flow”, “gently”, “sweet”,”Afton”,”among”,”thy”,”green”,”braes”, “Flow”,”gently”,”I’ll”,”sing”,”thee”,”a”,”song”, “in”, “thy”,”praise”,”My”, “Mary’s”, “asleep”, “by”, “thy”, “murmuring”, “stream”,”Flow”, “gently”, “sweet”, “Afton”, “disturb”, “not”, “her”, “dream”, “Thou”, “stock-dove”, “whose”, “echo”, “resounds”, “thro'”, “the”, “glen”,”Ye”, “wild”, “whistling”, “blackbirds”, “in”, “yon”, “thorny”, “den”,”Thou”, “green”,”crested”, “lapwing”, “thy”, “screaming”, “forbear”,”I”, “charge”, “you”, “disturb”, “not”, “my”, “slumbering”, “fair”,”How”,”lofty”, “sweet”
/*Afton, thy neighbouring hills,Far mark’d with the courses of clear winding rills;There daily I wander as noon rises high, My flocks and my Mary’s sweet cot in my eye.
How pleasant thy banks and green valleys below, Where wild in the woodlands the primroses blow; There oft, as mild Ev’ning sweeps over the lea, The sweet-scented birk shades my Mary and me.
Thy crystal stream, Afton, how lovely it glides, And winds by the cot where my Mary resides, How wanton thy waters her snowy feet lave, As gathering sweet flowrets she stems thy clear wave.
Flow gently, sweet Afton, among thy green braes, Flow gently, sweet river, the theme of my lays; My Mary’s asleep by thy murmuring stream, Flow gently, sweet Afton, disturb not her dream*/

poemlong word1;
//long word2;
void setup(){
randomSeed(666);//randomise text
void loop()                    {
word1 = random(sizeof(poem)/sizeof(char*));
//choose one of the words
//word2 = random(sizeof(poem)/sizeof(char*));
Serial.println(poem[word1]);//print it
//  Serial.println(poem[word2]);
//need to figure out code to display this in IR led format….help

delay(10000);//wait 10 seconds go again}

So the idea is to load these onto each poem box with unique poems and see what connections can be produced from these poems and these locations.
